It’s weird and sad that a lot of people are growing their gardens and lawns using fertilizer made from petroleum. It’s weird that growing a garden helps kill our climate if we use oil based fertilizers.

So to the rescue is, taaa daaa, the ancient miracle of turning our precious poo and pee into fertilizer through composting. It is now rarely seen in the US and many other over-developed countries, sadly.

So, or for somebody you love and some species you love, start making humanure at your home and in your community. That’s right I said humanure, a word derived from the words human and manure.

Humanure is human poop and piss that is recycled via composting as a fertilizer for food gardens and other plants. There is a cool book on it by Joseph Jenkins.

Humanure is made with the feces, urine, paper and another carbon material (like sawdust). A humanure system, such as a composting toilet, does not require water or electricity, and when properly managed does not smell.

The composted poop and pee creates nutrients that can be used to enrich soil. Lots of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, carbon, and calcium and that’s good. Properly composted #1 and #2 as good or better than most any other commercial fertilizer. Plus, humanure conserves fresh water by reducing the use of water used by flush toilet. Plus, it helps protect ground water by controlling the fecal matter decomposition before entering the ground.

Because it reduces water use, it therefore reduces energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions associated with the transportation and processing of water and waste water.

Humanure is safe for use on food gardens if it is composted properly. To do this, This the thermophilic decomposition of the humanure must heat it sufficiently to destroy harmful pathogens, or enough time must have elapsed since fresh material was added that biological activity has killed any pathogens. To be safe for crops, a curing stage is often needed to allow a second mesophilic phase to reduce potential phytotoxins.

Properly composted and cured humanure has killed any dangerous pathogens by the extreme heat of the composting and the extended amount of time (1 to 2 years) that it is allowed to decompose.

So, compost is organic matter that has been recycled and decomposed fertilizer and soil fixer. Compost is a big part in organic gardening and farming. Composting can be done with a pile of wet organic matter (leaves, food waste) that after weeks or months of sitting around, the materials break down and turn into soil. Composting can be a multi-step process with measured amounts of water, air and carbon- and nitrogen-rich mgoodies. The decomposition is helped by shredding the plant matter, adding water and ensuring proper aeration by regularly turning the mixture. Worms and fungi yessssss hasten the break up the material. Aerobic bacteria sustain the chemical process by converting the components into heat, carbon dioxide and ammonium. The ammonium is then converted by bacteria into plant-nourishing fertilizer with nitrites and nitrates via nitrification.

Compost can be super rich in nutrients. It can be used in gardens, landscaping, horticulture, and agriculture. It’s good for the land as a soil conditioner, a fertilizer, source of humus or humic acids, and as a natural pesticide for soil. In ecosystems, compost is useful for erosion control, land and stream reclamation, wetland construction, and as landfill cover (see compost uses).
